Surface Ship and Submarine Fire Fighting Modifications


The Navy's 19F Series Surface Ship Firefighting Trainers provide shipboard firefighting teams training in the extinguishing of Class A, B, and C shipboard fires. The trainer is an advanced electro/mechanical system that simulates shipboard fires by using live, computer-controlled, propane-fueled fires.

RDR conducted two separate modifications to the US Navy's 19F Series Surface Ship Firefighting Trainers located in San Diego, CA; Norfolk, VA; Great Lakes, IL, Ingleside, TX, and Mayport, FL. The two modifications consisted of a redesign and replacement of the propane ignition system on the trainers, and the design and installation of several safety/user-friendly enhancements. The Fire Firefighting Trainer project consisted of modification efforts to the following four different trainer types:

• 19F1B – Advanced Firefighting Trainer
• 19F3B – Basic Firefighting Trainer
• 19F3C – Multipurpose Shipboard Firefighting Trainer
• 19F4A – Aircraft Firefighting Trainer

The tasks required by these modifications included:

• Engineering design and development of hardware modifications.
• Parts selection and procurement.
• On-site installation of modifications.
• Test and verification of installed modifications.
• Development and delivery of engineering and maintenance documentation of modifications.
• Participation with Government personnel in Integrated Product Team (IPT) program approach.
