Virtual Environment Submarine Shiphandling Trainer (VESUB)


Using a fully immersed virtual reality head-mounted display, the Virtual Environment Submarine (VESUB) creates an interactive real-time instructional environment to train submarine Officers-of- the-Deck (OODs) in the procedures, voice commands and navigational skills necessary to successfully and safely operate a surfaced submarine through restricted waterways. VESUB also utilizes voice recognition and synthetic speech technologies to allow the OOD to interact with a simulated submarine crew.

RDR has designed fabricated and installed VESUB trainers at 6 major submarine training centers worldwide. Highlights of our activities include:

• Develop the overall system design and selection of all components. Integrate and test all hardware interfaces.
• Create, debug and test the system software, integrate visual databases, instructor station controls and build training scenarios.
• Investigate and design the synthetic speech and voice recognition hardware and software. Build trainer unique vocabulary libraries.
• Design and fabricate student visual and audio control interface circuits.
• Design the student station (simulated submarine bridge).
• Integrate, install and test all components.
• Prepare a complete documentation set including engineering drawings, operation and maintenance manuals and logistics support package for turnkey use.
