Submarine Piloting and Navigation (SPAN) Trainer Instructor Operator Station


The submarine piloting navigation trainer (SPAN) is used to train enlisted men and officers in the proper planning and execution of a pre-determined navigation plan. Through the use of naval navigation techniques and simulated and tactical equipment, the team ensures the ship is safely piloted and navigated in various harbors and weather conditions. The government requested RDR modify the VESUB instructor operator station software to configure and control the SPAN 2000 trainer. The modifications duplicated the functionality of the VESUB training system and coexist with the SPAN 2000 software. Additional features and controls were added to the Instructor menu system tp provide the means for the instructor to remotely command and view the status of the member simulations in the SPAN 2000 trainer. The member simulations include:

1. Data repeater displays
2. Primary periscope simulation
3. Secondary periscope simulation
4. AN/BPS-15/Voyage Management System (VMS) tactical suite
5. AN/WRN-6 Global Positioning System (GPS) simulation
6. AN/BQN-17 Fathometer simulation
7. Helm control station simulation
8. ARCI-Blk4 passive broadband sonar display
9. Electronically Suspended Gyro Navigation (ESGN)/Ring Laser Gyro Navigation(RLGN) simulation
10. OOD station
11. Lookout Station
12. Video Distribution System
13. Audio Distribution System

In addition to incorporating modified VESUB IOS software into the SPAN trainer, RDR also developed a means to generate reports of the real-time performance data and provide the means for the instructor of inserting simulated equipment malfunctions.
