U.S. Marine Corps

Forward Observer Training System (FOTS)

"FOTS" provides Call-for-Fire (CFF) Training for US Marine Corps Forward Observers by enabling "students" to practice locating targets, call for/adjusting fire, reporting fire on simulated battlefield environments.

Five years ago, RDR began integrating several modifications to the FOTS systems around the world. The Simulation and Training Team enhanced the performance of the overall system and its speech recognition/synthetic speech capabilities through software modifications, hardware and software upgrades.

RDR developed a PC based solution with 15 student stations and 2 Instructor Control Stations. Key system features include:
  • Synthetic Voice and Speech Recognition Technology
  • Match firing tables for NATO Artillery Ballistics Kernel (NABK)
  • Intelligent Tutor Program
  • Robust Instructor controls – individual and group monitoring and feedback
The RDR modifications have been so well received that planned expanded applications include: Developing systems for EWTGLANT and Naval Strike and Air Warfare Center in NAS Fallon, NV; Portable FOTS and Laptop FOTS; Close Air Support Training; and, Core Technology for Multi-Purpose Supporting Arms Trainer platform.

RDR was selected by NAVAIR as the partner of choice to develop the overall system design, to integrate COTS, and to fabricate VESUB 2000 for installation at 6 major submarine training centers. RDR was responsible for integrating system components and software, visual databases and instructor station controls as well as building training scenarios.

Key features of the system include:
  • 10 robust harbor databases
  • 360ƒ virtual view
  • Voice recognition/synthetic speech technologies, allowing for OOD interaction with sub crews
  • A virtual environment, where students learn how to react in specific situations such as weather conditions, collision avoidance, "man" overboard and jammed equipment
